Regarding Software for the course:
We will use a program called FlexPDE, which has a free student edition (link below).  This runs on a PC, so be sure you arrange for the necessary access (via ECI lab, your own laptop, or other facilities) prior to week 3 of the course.  Other non-mandatory software that nevertheless could be useful for homework assignments are programs for engienering mathematics such as Mathematica or MATLAB.  A simple Mathematica tutorial can be found here.

Note: The FlexPDE site has a free .ZIP file which contains a book ("Fields of Physics") that describes how to use FlexPDE and a set of example files.
