Research Focus

Our work is aimed at developing high-power, broadband solid-state microwave and millimeter-wave amplifiers for communications and radar transmitters, as an alternative to vacuum-electronic (tune) systems.  Our approach is to develop novel circuits or combiner structures that integrate a large number of semiconductor devices, addressing fundamental limitations in device output power at high frequencies (the classic Pf 2=constant limitation).  Our most successful efforts have centered on the use of broadband antenna arrays for power distribution and collection, a so-called "spatial" combining technique.  We have demonstrated GaAs-based combiners with up to 150Watts output power at X-band (8-11GHz) using this technique, integrating  32 commercial  MMICs.   Currently we are exploring new architectures for improved bandwidth, increased power capacity, and high efficiency, and are adapting these technologies to wide-bandgap (Sic and GaN) devices for ultra high power systems.
